  • Create FOUR new sequences. To complete this project we are actually going to create FIVE nested sequences - so let's create (and name) all five of them right now.
  • (Note: if you do NOT have the correct files, notify your teacher). The rest are there in case you need them for future projects. We will actually only use one of these sound. For this project you should have one video file ( saberPractice.MOV) and four audio files.
  • Open Source Files. Open your Source Files folder and make sure you have the correct source files.
  • For example, my project would be called Light Saber - CrossSave this project in the NLE folder of your Light Saber - Student folder. Call the project Light Saber - LastNamewhere "LastName" is YOUR last name.
  • Open NLE. Open your NLE (Adobe Premiere) and create a new project.

To better sell this effect we should have had something that has a more realistic handle - like maybe a toy light saber. You just need something that you can go back and mask over later. You can really use anything for your saber. When you watch the video with our actor, you will notice that the actor is just swinging around a piece of cardboard tubing.
  • Rotoscope the saber (as mentioned above).

To pull off the light saber effect, you need to do a process called rotoscoping - frame-by-frame masking and animation. The light saber effect is one of the most popular special effects to try to duplicate. You will create a simple 1 second clip demonstrating the light saber effect (made popular in the Star Wars movies).
